Re: furthur vs. the dead |
I was on a road trip with a couple lady friends of mine and we were looking through CDs to see what was next. One of them sees a bootleg I made with Dark Star on it and she's like oh is this Dark Star? I'm like, "yeah it's a good version" and she says, "oh nevermind, if it was DSO I would have put it in but I don't want to listen to the Grateful Dead"
My mind was completely blown. This person would rather listen to a GD cover band... Her reasons were that the GD weren't weird enough and also that she had seen DSO live so she could jive with the way the players interact... uhh I dunno but I think it's the vocals, which a lot of people are turned off by. Are they that bad?

That was my reaction too. It was pretty gory as I was actually driving when this occurred.

Re: furthur vs. the dead |
this is mindboggling to me too, dp. i love seeing DSO but when it come to listening i have not once reached for any of their shows (i don't even think i have any actually) over a real GD performance. i mean i realize its subjective, but why would you want some watered down listening experience when you can have the real deal? like picking Skoal when you can have Grey Goose for the same price.
the vocals? i think we can all agree this is not the GD's strong suit, but c'mon, their totally listenable most of the time. pretty suspect reason to pick DSO...sounds to me like she just isn't hearing what we are ;)

Re: furthur vs. the dead |
Man, she just doesn't "get IT". I've had great times seeing Crazy Fingers in Florida and Cubensis in LA...never saw DSO....but a cover band is a cover band is a cover band.
The last time I heard someone say they liked JK better than Jerry, my reply was "let's just not go there please". That was me being very nice.
Heck, the GD were a cover band to a large degree, but they reinvented alot of tunes and actually made alot of them sound better.
